Herculaneum Mosaics

I thought Pompeii had a lot of great mosaics until we visited Herculaneum.  This smaller Roman city was also devastated by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius, but instead of being buried by ash, it was buried by 60 feet of molten mud.  This molten mud kept the city of Herculaneum better preserved overall.

The vast number of mosaics was almost overwhelming.  Here are just a few:

Simple, yet intricate and detailed

Herculaneum was a port city

There was a lot of color in these mosaics

Crumbling mosaic (sorry for the tilted pic, still having this problem with Blogger)

Geometric shapes were popular.

Mosaics of Pompeii

I was amazed by mosaics from the moment I saw my first Roman mosaic here in Italy. Wow! They are amazing, 2000 year old works are art. Some are simple, some are quite complex. All are beautiful.
On my blog, Daily Life in Italy, I have chronicled our recent trip to southern Italy, but I only showed a few photos of mosaics, choosing instead to share them all here in this blog. So, off we go into the world of Roman mosaics...
